Nancy S. Heishman, coordinator of Spanish-language ministry training programs for the Brethren Academy for Ministerial leadership, has resigned; she plans to continue her work with the Academy through the end of October 2017. As of November 6, she will serve as director of the Office of Ministry for the Church of the Brethren.
During her two years with the Academy, she has administered the Seminario Biblico Anabautista Hispano-de la Iglesia de los Hermanos (SeBAH-CoB) program and the new Spanish-language track of Education for a Shared Ministry (EFSM). Coordinated in partnership with the Mennonite Education Agency, SeBAH is a certificate-level ministry training program for Spanish speakers that leads to ordination in the Church of the Brethren. EFSM, which offers training to help congregations develop stronger ministerial leadership, welcomed its first congregational cohort of Spanish speakers in March 2017. Heishman has also served the wider denomination by arranging for the translation of Church of the Brethren ministry documents into Spanish.
The Academy is a partnership between Bethany and the Church of the Brethren Office of Ministry, and in her new role, Heishman will join Academy director Janet Ober Lambert in providing leadership for the Academy. Affirming Heishman’s gifts in collaboration and communication, Ober Lambert noted how the Spanish-language programs have flourished under her leadership. “Nancy has furthered educational opportunities for Spanish-speaking Brethren as well as encouraged their participation in ways that benefit the entire denomination. Serving as a bridge between two languages, she has helped our church family grow and increase its abilities to communicate with one another, drawing wider the Brethren circle. We are excited about the skills and personality she will bring to the Office of Ministry, and I truly believe this transition will be blessing for the whole church.”
