Dr. Joelle Hathaway Publishes Chapter in New Book

Dr. Joelle Hathaway

Dr. Joelle Hathaway, assistant professor of theological studies and director of the MATW program, has contributed a chapter to a new book, Naming the Spirit: Pneumatology Through the Arts (Intervarsity Press, 2025).

Dr. Hathaway’s chapter (co-authored with Devon Abts) is entitled, “The Spirit as Breath: Poetic Imagination and the Word-Bearing Breath.”

“Pneumatology can both illuminate and be illuminated by an engagement with the arts,” notes Dr. Hathaway. “More boldly, we can do pneumatology through the arts. Drawing on specific examples from a wide range of media — music, poetry, visual art, film, and landscape architecture— each chapter in this volume seeks to deepen our understanding of a particular name for the Holy Spirit as it relates to the Spirit’s work in the world.”

Dr. Hathaway earned her doctorate in theology at Duke Divinity School. Her teaching and scholarship includes a focus on visual art, poetry, and ecological theology, among other topics.
