BOLD Service Day

A group of 20 students, faculty members, and staff from Bethany Theological Seminary participated in a BOLD Service Day at Richmond Senior Recreation Center on Monday, April 20, 2026. The group joined staff from the City of Richmond Parks and Recreation as well as other community volunteers to improve the Center’s grounds — sprucing up flower beds, installing a new bench, cleaning up the area around the main entrance, and more.

Service days are a tradition at the Seminary and are organized through Bethany BOLD, the signature service-based program for exceptional residential students. BOLD (which stands for Build, Organize, Love, and Dare) connects students with service opportunities at local non-profit organizations. The students help address community needs while pursuing their degrees.

Bethany employees and students complete BOLD Service days at organizations that host Bethany BOLD students as volunteers during the academic year. Previous events have been hosted by Townsend Center and the Boys and Girls Club of Wayne County.

The Richmond Senior Recreation Center provides a wide variety of activities and services to residents age 50 and over. For a modest membership fee, individuals can participate in exercise classes, sports, arts and crafts groups and classes, educational events, games, reduced-price meals, and widowed persons support. The Center is operated by the City of Richmond.

The Seminary encourages employees to give back to their community, and many individuals serve as board members and active volunteers at a variety of organizations like arts groups, food charities, social service organizations, schools, and churches. This commitment dates back to the earliest days of the Seminary, when students balanced their studies with volunteer work in soup kitchens and prisons.
