Bethany Celebrates the Class of 2024

Bethany Theological Seminary will celebrate graduates from its Class of 2024 during its commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m. in Nicarry Chapel.

The Seminary will welcome Rev. Dr. Micah McCreary as speaker for commencement. McCreary is president of New Brunswick Theological Seminary (NBTS) in New Jersey, where he has served since 2017. His sermon is titled, “Beginning Again” and will reference Genesis 1:1-5.

“As a colleague and friend, Dr. McCreary is a trusted conversation partner in addressing the unique challenges in theological education while embracing new opportunities for growth and vitality,” says President Jeff Carter, noting that Bethany has an ongoing partnership with NBTS.

McCreary earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and his MDiv from Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University. He earned his MS and PhD in counseling psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) where he was on faculty for 21 years. He served in a variety of administrative roles at VCU, including as an assistant vice provost. McCreary has published a variety of journal articles and book chapters and published a book entitled Trauma and Race: A Path to Wellbeing (Fortress Press, 2023).

McCreary is an ordained minister and served as pastor for several churches in Virginia. He and his wife, Rev. Dr. Jacqueline Madison-McCreary, served as co-pastors of Spring Creek Baptist Church (Mosely, Va.) and operated a consulting firm. They have an adult daughter.
