Bethany Hosts Film Screening

Bethany Seminary cornerstones

Bethany Theological Seminary and Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church will sponsor a screening of a new documentary film, Making room at the table: The Story of the Philadelphia 11, on Saturday, November 4, 2023  1:00-3:00 p.m. in Nicarry Chapel on Bethany’s campus, 615 National Road West (adjacent to Earlham College), in Richmond. Doors open at 12:30 p.m.

This compelling new film chronicles the experiences of the first women to become Episcopal priests. Carter Heyward and Nancy Wettig, two of the Philadelphia 11, will be present. They will offer a time of reflection and answer questions about their journey after the viewing.

The film, directed by Margo Guernsey, shows how a brave group of women shattered the stained-glass ceiling on July 29, 1974, by challenging the very core of patriarchal culture to seek ordination as priests in the Episcopal Church. It is a powerful story of faith and conviction. It is a story for all of us, regardless of faith tradition.

This screening is part of Bethany’s commitment to partner with the larger Richmond community. The Seminary regularly hosts events for such local organizations as Richmond Civic Theatre and Wayne County Chamber of Commerce. The Seminary also sponsors Bethany BOLD, a service-based program for exceptional students, which offers them opportunities to work with local non-profit organizations while earning their graduate degrees, and address issues like poverty and racial justice.

Admission to this event is free, but registration required through Eventbrite.
