Shane Claiborne to Speak at Nicarry

Bethany Theological Seminary will host a public lecture by evangelical Christian activist, speaker, and author Shane Claiborne on Tuesday, April 16, at 7 p.m. in Nicarry Chapel. The event is co-sponsored by Earlham College.

Claiborne is a social activist known for advocating for nonviolence and service to the poor. He is the author or co-author of several books including The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical (Zondervan). He is a co-founder of both The Simple Way, a non-profit focused on providing food security in an impoverished area of Philadelphia, and Red-Letter Christians, a group of evangelicals who seek to bring attention to the social justice issues that are mentioned in words attributed to Jesus in the Bible.

A Tennessee native and a graduate of Eastern University, he is also known for his opposition to military spending and the death penalty.

“We are delighted to welcome Shane Claiborne to the Bethany Campus,” says President Jeff Carter. “Shane is an important voice on issues that align with the values of the Seminary and the Church of the Brethren. I am excited that students, faculty, staff, and community members will have an opportunity to engage with him.”

Claiborne’s talk at Bethany is titled, “Building a World Beyond Violence.” He previously visited Bethany in 2015 to speak at Bethany’s Presidential Forum. The event is free and open to the public.
